French marigolds are among the simplest annuals to cultivate and maintain, whether you start with saved seeds, store-bought seeds, or nursery seedlings.
 
Planting French Marigold
Space nursery seedlings 10 to 12 inches apart for borders or mass plantings. Water thoroughly until the plants are established, then let the soil dry out between waterings. If you have heavy clay soil, improve it by mixing in aged compost or sand before planting. In nutrient-poor soil, apply a balanced fertilizer like NPK 10-10-10 at the time of planting.
 
Seeds can be sown directly in the garden or started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds 1 inch apart and 1/4 inch deep, covering them completely with soil. Water well. Once the seedlings develop foliage, thin them to 10 to 12 inches apart.
